success? --UPDATE--

I knew it was too good to be true....
Gracie was up at 11, 2, and 5. Fun night. However-she did not cry at all last night when we put her to bed, so that's progress! I'm trying to look on the bright side this tired Monday:)
Thanks everyone for your words of wisdom and concern! I think we are over the worst, YAY!

We may have done it.
I cut the tips off of a few paci's Friday night. Grace was quite confused/not too happy. She kept taking it out of her mouth and handing it to me to "fix" it. I told her Sorry Grace, it's broken. Then she threw it at me....and went on with life. All's well till bedtime. But it's not as bad as I thought it would be. She cried for about 10 minutes--about all I can stand--then she went to sleep! She fussed a couple times after that and wanted it, but I just let her hold the "broken" one and it seemed to help. Repeat the same thing last night, and guess what SHE SLEPT ALL NIGHT BOTH NIGHTS! This is huge. For 16 months I have gotten up at least once a night to "plug" her. I don't know if it's a fluke thing and there could still be some rough moments (like in the car when a paci would stop the incessant whining) but I think we are on our way to paci freedom!

Hope the non-paci routine is going well. I've discovered that as parents we tend to worry more about each upcoming stage (taking away bottles, pacifiers, trasition to toddler bed) but in reality kids are so resilient. It's rough for the first week or so because if someone took my comforts away (Starbucks Frappucino, anything sweet, my contoured pillow...) I would be pretty darn cranky too! But when you see that 4 or 5 year old walking around Walmart with a paci hangin' out of their mouth, you think to yourself, I'll endure the week or so of fussiness because I've never encountered a Kindergartener going to school with a blankie, pacifier, or pulling a bottle out of their lunch box to drink their juice from!!!! hehehhehe!
