We tried... and failed, for now. I was home with the girls yesterday and they've been discussing potty time mostly after daycare days because they see the other kids doing it (peer pressure, already!) so I felt ambitious and I'm a gluten for punishment so I thought let's see that they do. I bought some elmo undies the other day so those were ready to go. Grace wanted nothing to do with it, or the undies. She proceeded to tell me she's a baby, crawl around instead of walk, and not say a word all morning. it was nice and quiet:)
Klaire on the other hand dug it at first. She loved the undies and not wearing any pants, and the m&m's for trying. She sat on the potty--for now we have the thing that sits on top so they won't fall in-- with no problem and waited, and waited, but nothing ever happened. We hung around (I followed her around) all day and were literally in the bathroom every 20 minutes, but for some reason the potty never actually went in the potty. She got a bit furstrated and so did I (although she had no idea I was:) We went through all 8 pairs of elmo undies and I decided that was probably enough for one day.
I left the attempt with a few questions that maybe some of my mommy experts can help me with?
1. How long do you let them sit at each attempt. I felt like she was on the potty all day and I can't imagine she'll have much patience for this after the novelty wears off.
2. Does she get the m&m for trying or only for actually going?
3. Do you think a potty chair would be beneficial? I'd rather keep them on the real thing if possible, but I'll try anything that'll work.
4. Will she be confused since I tried it for only one day and last night was back in diapers? Is this an all or nothing thing.
5. Doesn't it sound like she's just not ready? (and grace is obviously not ready at this time).
I learned that:
1. It will be ok to train one at a time...and actually I'm not sure if I can do both at once?
2. This is going to be a long haul.
3. Wood floors are my friend.
I know I shouldn't give up, and I probably should not have started on a day when I only had one day....but hey, she sat on it, and thought it was cool so maybe we can call that a little progress? Nikki gave me back my own words of wisdom "they'll be potty trained before college?" I think I liked being on the other end of that advice:)

from experience and talking w/other moms, the biggest mistake is starting before they are ready. it only leads to frustrated parents and inconsistency. when you do it, you want to do it, and be consistent. it's really hard to do that if they aren't ready b/c you will get frustrated and give in and go back to diapers, and then start over again.
oh and i totally vote the toilet seat cover. it onlytook my oldest one time peeing in a potty chair, and me having to dump it and clean it for me to realize that was not the way to go!
That's what I'm thinking....thanks Kim:)
I say the toilet as well. I gave the boys one m&M or jelly bean for trying and then maybe a sticker for actually going or maybe 2 or three candies. You will be surprised how quickly they will adapt when they are ready.
Good luck!
