croup it up!
Not sure where that title came from but I think it might be sleep deprivation. Just when I think we're over the hump so they say, and H had been sleeping all night for 3 nights in a row around rolls midnight Wednesday night. He was fussing and moving kinda strange on the monitor so I went in there to find him gasping and barking coughing. It was scary!!! I got him calmed down a little and he nursed for just a couple minutes, then he just could not settle down and could not stop the barking cough. He was wheezing and what I now know to be called retracting, it was no good:( I called the 24 hour nurse line through my ped and after trouble shooting all we could with standing in the hot shower, breathing in the freezer, etc etc she said "I can hear his breathing over the phone, you need to take him in." Sigh. I hate the ER and avoid it at all costs. They charge you for walking in the door and in my experience are less help than any other type of clinic (for a non emergency that is). SO we went because he needs to be able to breathe. Lets just say it was not a good experience....now I know they see croup every day and his oxygen levels were fine, but I can't get past the fact that they treated me like I was freaking out for no reason. The doctor actually asked me if this is my first baby. As if first time moms are allowed the non essential trip to the ER? For the record no, I'm not, but even if I was, it doesn't matter! Long story short they gave him one breathing treatment and saw improvement, so said that was all they could do. He actually read it off of a sheet of paper that steroids are over prescribed and they aren't supposed to give them out as much. Um, could you please prescribe on a case by case basis!? So no meds, nothing to send me home with nothing to do but the home remedies I already tried. He actually never even touched Henry and observed him from across the room. The ER made me feel that I was a druggie looking for narcotics for goodness sake. The person that spent the most time with us was the lady from billing making SURE she had the correct insurance info to bill us. I think I might be writing a letter.
Anyway, after a sleepless night Henry was no better if not worse in the morning. I called my ped, they got us in and right away gave him the one dose of steroids to help with that swollen airway. It is so frustrating that I had to jump through hoops and see another doctor to get him what he needed. He's feeling all little better this morning and I'm back at work. Croup, you can stay way from now on! ...but next time I probably won't risk a trip to the ER.
On a happy note, Grace was reading to Henry last night...cutest thing ever!
